INFORMATION RETRIEVAL: Pioneers in IR

THE ASSIGMENT

Professor's Instruction: Write a 5-8 page paper on one of the IR pioneers.  Your pioneer can one talked about in the text or another of your choosing.  If you  are not sure whether the individual you want to write about qualifies, just run it by me on email (vlgtampa@aol.com).  The Chu book listed in the supplementary readings (see syllabus) has a number of pioneers with brief descriptions of their contributions to IR.  The website of the Association for Information Science & Technology (www.asist.org) also has a lot of information on the history of IR and its pioneers.  Be sure to concentrate on their contributions to the field of Information Retrieval.

HOW I DID IT!!

Steps taken for the completion of this assignment:

1.Choosing my pioneer:

Many were the great options for this assignment. Throughout the ASIS&T - The Information Association for the Information Age I could access some background information on many great names of Information Retrieval. However, my final choice was Henriette Avram. She created MARC format. I have used MARC before, and really enjoying doing cataloging on that format.

2. Actual research of resources was made at USF libraries
