IFLA's Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records

FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) is a 1998 recommendation of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) to restructure catalog databases to reflect the conceptual structure of information resources.
More technically, FRBR uses an entity-relationship model of metadata for information objects, instead of the single flat record concept underlying current cataloging standards. The FRBR model includes four levels of representation: work, expression, manifestation, and item. If fully implemented, FRBR would produce the biggest change cataloging has seen in the last century. HENRIETTE AVRAM & THE MARC FORMAT

Henriette Davidson Avram was born in New York on Oct 07th, 1919, and passed away on April 22^nd,2006. Henriette Avram, started her professional computer analyst careerat the National Security Agency. She continued growing on her profession at Datatrol Corporation – one of the first computer software firms in United States. In 1965, Henriette joined the Library of Congress staff team as a Systems Analyst. After Henriette D. Avram, the history of library automation, and the way librarians do cataloging were never the same. In the early eighties, Avram became the Director for Processing Systems, Network and Automation Planning at Library Congress. By 1983, she was managing over one thousand technical staff.

MARC record is a tool libraries use to perform cataloging of different printed and non-printed items or works (books, e-books, magazines, journals, 3D objects, audio-video items,...etc.). Cataloging can be descriptive, meaning physical description of an
item (title, author, location); and subjective which is related toclassification and subject headings issues. For descriptive cataloging information specialists use AACR2 – Anglo American Cataloging Rules, which it is being replaced by RDA – Resource Description and Access. RDA is just a revised version of AACR2, covering descriptive needs for digital, and online information resources. For subjective cataloging, information specialists most commonly use DDC – Dewey Decimal System,and LCSH - Library of Congress Subject Headings.
